Prostitution reduction
Commercial sex is as old as the human race but it remains a vice that some societies would like to see abolished.

In Kenya, the business has mutated into different forms which include upper class prostitution and low level prostitution.

The rate at which prostitution is spreading into residential areas is worrying especially to parents who are raising teenage girls.

It is unfortunate that the price of entertaining a client sexually has gone down to as low as Ksh 20 or just a meal per night for some of the low class operators.

The same society that would like to see an end to prostitution should be blamed for pushing girls into the business by not doing enough in terms of empowering them economically.

Women leaders at the Coast have discussed their concerns over this issue and are now urging the government to make the women and youth fund easily available to commercial sex workers who are willing to venture into other businesses.

The Coast Women in Development chairperson Ms Betty Sharon says her discussions with most of the commercial sex workers reveal that they are in the business because it is the only available means of earning a living.

She says those women and young girls in the business go through all sorts of abuse and would be glad if they found other means of earning their daily bread.

However, she did add that some of the women are in the business because they love doing it and are not willing to quit but insists there are many who can be rescued from the ‘deadly business’.

She laments that clients are another stumbling block to reduction of prostitution since they would like the services rendered to them to continue and are likely to oppose moves to bring down the sector.

RE: Prostitution reduction
Logic does not usually play a role in creation of laws relating to drugs, prostitution and abortion. That’s not to say never, but religion, tradition/culture are the main backbones. Ideally, this wouldn’t be the case. The safest, smartest, and best way will conflict with religious morale, which is stubborn and irrational for the most part.
